Will AI Replace Human Creativity?

I have the privilege of working with AI and must admit I’m impressed with the capabilities available.

For those of you who may not be as familiar, think of AI as a hammer that can determine the proper nail needed for the material you are banging it into, the proper force to obtain an optimal penetration, and the ideal rhythm to ensure the least amount of frictional resistance.

While it doesn’t bang the nail into the wall without a human wielding it, don’t be surprised to see AI mastered robots taking over in your lifetime, if not within the next 5 – 10 years.

In short, AI saves time by drawing upon an internet of knowledge and coming up with the best solutions it is capable of much faster than a human ever could. I’ll admit I even use AI to help me find the best product after I input my requirements, such as must be mostly metal vs. plastic, have at least a 3-year warranty, and highly rated reviews no less than 1000. I see in minutes what could have taken me hours to research on my own. (Granted, I am a bit obsessive about scouring the internet and comparing items before making a purchase, but that is coded into my DNA!)

What I never expected AI to take over was human creativity. I thought this was something no “artificial” model could ever replace. Sure, AI can generate great pictures or write stories but only based on prompts and instructions that we provide. Just a tool to make life easier, not come up with its own ideas.

According to this article, though, AI may be doing exactly that. Some AI systems (think latest and greatest models) are now exceeding average human scores on tasks designed to measure divergent linguistic creativity.

The good news is that the creative humans are still kicking AI’s metaphorical rear ends for now, but as AI evolves that may change.

Heck, all we have to do is ask AI how to make itself more creative and I think the day is coming soon when it will do exactly that.
