Magnets on Mars For Human Survival

Living on Mars was once a science fiction story.

Today, we are planning an actual mission and resolving the barriers one by one to ensure success.

There are several critical elements of survival we all take for granted here on Earth. The first one is oxygen, without which we would die within minutes. In order to survive on another planet without Earth’s atmosphere we need to be able to breathe.

Generating oxygen may be easier with magnets, according to this article. Using electrolysis to separate the oxygen from hydrogen in water under weightless conditions presents challenges. Bubbles of gas do not rise. But when magnetized, the water releases these bubbles and this simple activity can make all the difference.

Oxygen generation is critical to provide a Martian colony with breathable air. Next there is water, then food, then shelter. All of these challenges will be overcome and perhaps humans will start living on Mars within the next decade.

We take the Earth for granted because in our very tiny timeline of existence humans have managed to survive and thrive. All it takes to change this is a single catastrophe such as a meteor impact or a global cataclysmic event such as a major volcanic eruption.

Survival of a species requires planetary independence. Even if we manage to bypass any Earthly incidents, eventually our sun will run out of juice. We take time in tiny bites as we live our everyday lives, but if you look at the larger picture you can see the ability to travel through space and colonize other worlds is the only sure way to avoid extinction.
