Living on the Moon – “I Can’t See!”

Researchers Estimate Ice Content of Crater at Moon's South Pole

NASA’s Artemis programs will lead to a lunar space station, with intense development and planning required first.

As a writer of science fiction, I try to incorporate actual science into the stories to make them believable and credible. Sci-fi is meant to extrapolate upon ideas and technology toward something futuristic or revealed by an advanced race. These details are woven into the fabric of the story and generally interact with the characters in a subtle but believable manner.

This requires an understanding of the actual science to extrapolate from and the ability to leverage it while the characters go about their business.

This article referencing the difficulties in seeing the moon landscape due to the anticipated base location highlights the above nuances perfectly.

It is not enough to write a story about characters living on this moon base. The position of the sun would be a vital setting element that needs to be included. It could be mentioned the first time a character visits the base, or it could simply be part of the description of what the character sees without further explanation, but it needs to be there as much as experiencing lighter gravity.

Put yourself into the astronauts’ boots. What technology will NASA develop to help them overcome this obstacle? How will it impact their moods? Will mistakes be made and how serious will the outcome of these mistakes be?

These are my thoughts on writing sci-fi in regards to where the lunar base is planned. What do you think about it?
