Human Progression: Are We On the Right Track?

In modern times the world is an amazing place, full of innovations and sprawling metropolises.

Have you ever wondered how or why we reached this point, despite ourselves? What if humans had remained loners instead of forming societies and achieving civilization?

Try to imagine the early days of humanity, surviving ferocious predators and harsh climates. If societal groups had not formed it is likely we would not have survived as a species. We can certainly infer that those who remained loners perished, unable to compete with the advantages of societal groups.

What fundamental human component agreed to work together with others in order to achieve this state? There had to be a leader who told others what to do, and the followers willing to trust the leader with their lives.

In today’s world we are raised within this framework and do not expect anything else, diminishing our ability to think for ourselves. We have laws to follow and do not need to come up with logical ways to interact with others. We have a system of law and order, and have agreed to abide by the laws or face the consequences. When we disagree with other societal units, we can organize a team reversion to savagery and impose our own laws and rules upon others through superior force.

The complexities of human society evolution really pull you away from today’s reality and make you wonder if we could have evolved better. While conceivably necessary to outdistance our competitors in the early days, if we shed the savagery we might be better off. Although we consider ourselves civilized today all you have to do is read the news headlines to realize we are not as civilized as we could be.

Hopefully it is not too late to reconsider our societal functionality and find a path forward that truly elevates instead of decimates. What are your thoughts on the evolution of human society? Please comment below.
